Over 300 people attended on a chilly morning, and the excitement, energy and interest was palpable. It was not only an inspiring event, but a fitting launch to our 2008 campaign period, beginning today, November 25 – the UN Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women, and ending December 6th, The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
As a brief wrap-up to the event with Jackson Katz – we wanted to send out his list of online resources, and a reminder of the 5 things you can do to make a personal impact on ending men’s violence against women.
- Inform yourself. Talk with, and most importantly, listen to women’s experiences around violence. Learning about the problem is the first step to breaking the silence. Join in the conversation and share your thoughts about Jackson’s talk on our Blog
- Wear the White Ribbon and take the pledge to never commit, never condone, and never remain silent about violence against women. Even this ubiquitous act of wearing a ribbon can be a catalyst for change.
- Support the work with a donation. It’s no secret that all of this takes money. Donate to the White Ribbon Campaign, or many of the other very worthwhile organizations working to end men’s violence against women, and providing support for women and families leaving abusive situations.
- Start a White Ribbon Campaign in your school, workplace, or community. Engaging others in the issue and changing social silence around men’s role and responsibility is essential if we are to end this. If you are looking for ideas or support – contact us!
- If you work in an organization concerned with men’s violence against women, or any of the important issues interlinked with it contact us about partnering. If you are a teacher or an educator, access some of our educational materials. Partnering is the only way we are able to effectively scale up this work and begin to reach the people we need to with our efforts.
